Why Self Development Important

To keep it simple. Suppose you want to be successful and achieve everything you ever wanted. Why Self development important? It's almost impossible to achieve great things in life without working on yourself.

Self Development | Personal development

Those are not the same, both are important to focus on, but they are slightly different. Let's see what the difference between Personal Development and Self Development is.

What is Personal Development

It is developing a person's capability and potential by adding additional skills. Personal development can take the whole life, and there is nothing wrong with it, in my opinion. The more you know, the better your quality of life if you implement what you learn.

What is Self Development

Self Development, on the other hand, is improving your existing personal skills. If you think about why is self-development important? To me, it's to get the most out of this life. To be happy every day, knowing you are working to improve yourself is the most important asset you have.

There is only one corner of the universe you can be certain of improving, and that's your own self. - Aldos Huxley

Benefits of Self Development

Boost your confidence  - One of the benefits of self development is your confidence level will increase. Developing your inner self will give you a confidence boost.

Why Self Confidence Important?

Change your goals
- Your long term goals might change. Most people don't even have goals, but you will set more extensive and more significant goals once you work on yourself.

Skill enhancement - more skills you have and better quality skills will benefit you in the long run.

Create new habits - why not make it a habit? If you make self development one of your habits, you will achieve your long term goals and enjoy your life.

Step out of your comfort zone - life begins outside your comfort zone. I am sure you heard it plenty of times. Working on yourself will make it easier to step out of your comfort zone.

Improve mental health - everyone is battling their mental health differently. Doing regular activities to improve your self development will improve your mental health.

More opportunities - improving your self-development opens more possibilities and opens many doors you thought you would never be able to open. Become successful in different areas of your life.

By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail. - Benjamin Franklin

What are some self development skills?

Some skills you can improve are:

Communication - there is always room for improvement in communication. And there are different types of communication, so it is always possible to get better at it.

Organization - organization skills are essential and will benefit you and your performance in different areas. It will make you more efficient if it is at work or home.

Problem-solving is one of the skills that will get you promoted if you are working for someone else. Employers love people who can solve problems and find solutions.

Self - Confidence - is my favourite skill to work on. It's a daily process, and there are many ways to improve your self-confidence.

Integrity - being honest with yourself and others is a skill not many people have. We like to tell ourselves some excuses for why we procrastinate, for example.

Leadership - everyone can improve their leadership skills. Leaders are not born; they are made. They develop this skill; some do it when they are young, and some are a bit older, but believe me, anyone can develop leadership abilities. And there are no excuses.

Adaptability - another skill is to learn to adapt to any situation. It is easy if we have a growth mindset; it's not for fixed mindset people.

Nothing is impossible; the word itself says 'I'm possible'! - Audrey Hepburn

Personal development strategies

You can start implementing some easy but very effective ways and start working to improve yourself. I highly recommend all of this and using these strategies to improve myself.

Planning - every successful person plans their day/week/month/year. If you don't know what you will do, you waste time on pointless activities which won't get you closer to your dream life. I have done this for many years, and I am glad I started to plan my life.

Keep a journal - I think everyone has a journal at some point. I have had it many times, and lately, it is in my daily routine. Usually, in the evening, I look at and analyze my day. Go through everything I meant to do and point out any challenges or successes. It helps me identify if I am on the right track or procrastinating.

Meditate - Meditation is part of my morning routineIt is not as complicated as people say. It might be hard at the beginning to focus on your breath, for example, and not have distractions, but after practice, it's a lot easier, and It helps me to be more focused.

Challenges - sometimes, it's hard to stay consistent, but to build a habit, you need to be disciplined and remain constant for more than a couple of days. There are many challenges to help you stay on track, and you will have support from other people who are in the same boat and doing with you.

No social media - this one probably was the hardest one to do. We do not realize how addicted we are to our phones until we do not have access to it. I have been doing lately no phone for the first 2 hours in the morning, and I see a lot of benefits from it.

Cold showers - this one might be not for everyone, and I don't know many people taking cold showers every day. I have been doing it for a few years now, and it's a part of my identity now. I wrote more about it, and you can read it here.

Morning routine - If you want a simple but effective way to develop a habit, create a morning routine and follow it every day. We all have some routine after we wake up, so it makes sense to make it a bit useful and use this opportunity to develop yourself. Why not?

When you have a dream, you've got to grab it and never let go. - Carol Burnett

Conclusion

Why self development important? I hope you picked up some tips and realize that if you want to be successful, you have to consistently improve yourself, always learn something new and develop a habit of self development.

I am responsible for my life, and I am in charge of my future. If I want to achieve my goals and live the life I always dreamed of, I don't have the other options but to improve myself and how I spend my time.

  • I choose to be successful.
  • I choose to be happy.
  • I choose to be wealthy.
  • I choose to be healthy.
  • I choose to be free.

Nobody else would do it for me, so I stopped making excuses and started chasing my dreams.

  1. Personal development is so important throughout life to continue to grow and better yourself. It boosts your self confidence and adds to your skill set.

It is interesting that you mention cold showers as one of the personal developments strategies. It is something that I have been working on, but I find it very difficult to go straight under the freezing water. So at the moment I finish with a cold shower by gradually turning off the hot water and increasing the cold water. So I will continue to work on getting into the cold water.

Thanking for introducing me to many other strategies for my personal development.

    1. Thank you, LineCowley. Glad you like it. Regarding taking cold showers, I have been doing it for a few years now, and it’s like a developed habit now. I remember doing it the same as you when I was starting, finishing with cold water at the end. But one time, I decided to go for it – why not. Full-on cold water straight on. It was something, but I felt so good after that.

I choose to do it every morning now.

      Thank you for reminding me.

All the best on your journey with personal development – it is well worth it.

      Regards
